Don't miss out in claiming a rebate
on your electricity
in the winter

over the duration of the
Warm Home Discount scheme

which was first launched in the winter of 2011-2012.

You should get it automatically if on just guaranteed Pension Credit
on the chosen qualifying date,
and you should get the rebate applied to your electricity billing
by the end of March of each year.

Ask your electricity company if you do not receive it automatically!

Also ask your electricity company as soon as possible if you are on
another element of Pension Credit alone, the Savings element,
or are on this as well as the guaranteed Pension Credit element,
as you may have to apply, or you might still get it automatically.

If on disability benefits, or in some cases with some of
the energy companies, if just on a low income,
you will need to apply and as early as possible.

You will only get your rebate applied on your electricity
and so do not bother asking your supplier of just gas whether
you can get it automatically or can apply for it.

Beware switching from one electricity company to another -
as you could miss the cut-off date imposed on new customers
joining the company you move your electricity supply to,
to then be eligible to apply to
their Warm Home Discount scheme
(and where you do not qualify for an automatic entitlement).

Neither the electricity company you are leaving
nor the new company you are joining
is obliged to tell you about the Warm Home Discount scheme.

You will need to apply by contacting your energy company -
their websites under "Warm Home Discount"
should advise you or you can ring them directly,
asking about your eligibility to join.

Check out the Department for Work and Pensions' website:
https://www.gov.uk
putting Warm Home Discount in the search box
or just let your search engine look up DWP Warm Home Discount.

You can also safeguard yourself being cut off
from both your gas and electricity
in the event of being faced with a higher than anticipated bill
by joining your gas and electricity company's
Priority Services Register.

Ring your energy company to join.

It is free and also gives you a password
so that you can be sure a doorstep caller claiming to be
from your gas or electricity company, is who they say they are,
in them telling you what your password is -
the advice is keep it safe for your own reference
and out of view of all doorstep callers.
